The Za Vratlom mountain lodge, owned by the Subra Mountaineering Club, is located at an altitude of 1160 meters in the southern part of the Orjen mountain range.
Built in 1953 and fully renovated in 2011, it reflects the rich historical heritage of the coastal region. Founded in 1932, the Subra Mountaineering Club is one of the oldest mountaineering clubs in Montenegro. It holds a significant place in the history of this area, marked by the anti-fascist struggle of the Partisan Orjen Battalion during World War II. The Za Vratlom lodge has retained the spirit of true mountain huts, combining the memory of Partisan feats with the mountaineering tradition of this region.
The Za Vratlom mountain lodge can be reached by hiking from the abandoned "Borići" Motel, where the asphalt ends and the dirt road begins, or by off-road vehicle for a distance of about 3 kilometers.
The hike to the Za Vratlom mountain lodge takes about 1 hour, covering an elevation gain of 360 meters. It is 16 kilometers from Herceg Novi, or a 30-minute drive by car. For those interested in a longer hike and in good physical condition, there is a marked trail starting near the main bus station in Herceg Novi (coordinates: 42°27'12"N 18°32'07"E). This hike takes approximately 4 hours and has an elevation gain of 1090 meters.

Hiking and Walking Trails
The area surrounding the Za Vratlom mountain lodge offers endless possibilities for active vacation enthusiasts. For climbing and hiking lovers, there are hiking and walking trails of various difficulties and lengths. The views of the Bay of Kotor and the mountain ranges of Montenegro, including the mighty Durmitor, Komovi, and Prokletije, leave a strong impression.
The main and most attractive trail leads to the mountain beauty, Subra, standing at 1679 meters (coordinates: 42°31'28.2"N 18°32'17.5"E).
The trail is moderately difficult and requires good physical condition (not suitable for small children or pets/dogs). The ascent takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. There is also a circular route to the same peak via "Simo's Cave," which includes a few technical sections that require caution. The ascent on this trail takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes. This hiking tour offers exceptional views of Orjen, Reovačke Grede, Veliko Ćedilo, Prokletije, Durmitor, Lovćen, Rumija, and the Adriatic Sea.
Another interesting trail leads to the peak Odijevo at 1571 meters (coordinates: 42°30'27.4"N 18°31'44.0"E), which, according to many hikers and nature enthusiasts, offers the most beautiful view of the bay's entrance and the surrounding peaks of this part of the Orjen massif.
The trail is not difficult, but caution is required. The ascent takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes. You can also reach the same peak via a ridge, on a panoramic trail that goes over another peak, Kamenski Kabal, at 1387 meters (coordinates: 42.50596, 18.55281), which is about a 50-minute walk from the mountain lodge.
If you choose to take the ridge route, be sure to visit Vilina Cave, which is just below the trail and marked. The time needed for the circular tour via the ridge to Odijevo and back to the mountain lodge is approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes.

The lodge is ideal for single-day and multi-day hikes in the mountains.
Za Vratlom mountain lodge offers comfortable accommodation in 7 rooms of various capacities. There are two larger dormitories with 13 and 20 beds, and the remaining rooms are smaller with 4, 5, and 6 beds. The total capacity is 50 sleeping spots.
Thanks to a recent renovation, hikers and guests have access to modern amenities, including two spacious bathrooms with shower cabins on the ground floor, and two smaller bathrooms on the first floor. All rooms are heated with wood-burning central heating. The lodge is equipped with a 4KW solar system, and there is a large tank with a pump and filters for collecting rain and snow water.
The large communal dining room and well-equipped kitchen create a comfortable atmosphere, while the surrounding beech forests and meadows invite you to enjoy nature.

Opening hours depend on the time of year. During the winter season, the mountain lodge is open only on weekends (Saturday and Sunday), and for larger groups on other days by prior arrangement, with notice given a few days in advance.
In the summer season (from mid-June to the end of August), the mountain lodge is open almost all the time. However, it is recommended to check by contacting the caretaker, as the lodge may be closed for a day or two if supplies need to be restocked in the city.

In case of an accident, the mountain lodge is equipped with first aid, which will be provided until professional help arrives. The Subra Club has a group of mountain rescuers with many years of experience, including two active members of the Montenegrin Mountain Rescue Service (GSS).

In the event of a snake bite, we will immediately call for assistance from our mountain rescue team, as well as the city's medical services and firefighters. They will arrive at the mountain lodge as quickly as possible with their off-road vehicles.
For hiking on the trails in our region, it is essential to have good shoes, a change of clothes, sun protection during the summer, and enough water. The mountain lodge does not have hiking equipment available for rent.
